Headspace review for work stress: what it offers, what it costs, and what the evidence says
What the app and the employer plans include, the trial period, how the company's claims compare with a published workplace trial, and when to look elsewhere.
Headspace is a subscription app for guided meditation, mindfulness, and sleep, with add-ons for coaching and online therapy, and a separate business offering for employers. [1][2] It offers a 14-day free trial. [1] In one published trial of 238 UK employees, an eight-week programme using the app improved wellbeing and job strain compared with a wait-list group, though the app maker supplied the app and usage data and the comparison group did nothing. [3] The company's own outcome figures on its employer site come without methods. [4] A meditation app may help you pause. It does not change a workload.
What is Headspace?
For individuals, Headspace's homepage describes a subscription app with "1,000+ expert-led exercises" for meditation, mindfulness, and stress tools, plus sleep resources such as wind-downs, soundscapes, and sleepcasts. It also lists online therapy that accepts insurance, mental health coaching as an add-on to a subscription, and an AI companion called Ebb. [1] Business plans cover employers and health plans. [1][4]
The subscriptions page lists the core library of meditations, sleep sounds, yoga and fitness, and focus music, with a new meditation delivered daily. [2] Whether coaching, therapy, or the AI companion are included in a plan depends on the product and your location, so check at checkout.
What does it cost?
We could not confirm a price. The pages we read gave plan types but no figure we could rely on: the homepage showed "Try for $0" and the subscriptions page did not display an amount. [1][2] The pages show annual and monthly plans with student, family, and gift options, say subscriptions auto-renew, and say you can cancel at any time. [1][2]
Prices vary by country and channel, so look at the amount shown at checkout and at the renewal terms before you start. A free trial that turns into an annual charge is the main thing to watch.
| Item | What the pages say |
|---|---|
| Free trial | 14 days. [1][2] |
| Plans | Annual and monthly, with student, family, and gift options. [1] |
| Renewal | Subscriptions auto-renew and can be cancelled at any time. [1][2] |

| Through an employer | Offered via organisations and health plans; the employer site shows a demo request, not individual purchase. [4] |
What does Headspace offer for work?
The organisations site lists Headspace EAP (an employee assistance programme), Headspace Care (therapy, coaching, and psychiatry), Headspace Core (meditation, mindfulness, sleep, and focus tools), a population mental health product called Companion, workshops and webinars for leaders and teams, and the Ebb AI companion. [4] The site is aimed at employers, health plans, and consultants. It shows a request-a-demo route and does not say whether individuals can buy directly. [4]
If your employer offers Headspace, check which products are included and what your employer can see. The page does not give a confidentiality statement. [4]
What does the evidence say?
Two kinds of evidence are on offer: the company's figures, and independent research. Treat them differently.
On its employer site Headspace says "80+ peer-reviewed publications prove that Headspace makes members feel better, faster," and quotes outcomes such as these. [4]
| What Headspace says | Figure |
|---|---|
| More productive days, after 30 days | 3 |
| Members who engaged in coaching or clinical care and saw improvement in depression, after 6 to 16 weeks | 85% |
| The same group, for anxiety | 83% |
| Decrease in perceived stress, after 30 days | 32% |
The page gives no study designs, sample sizes, or methods. [4] Without those, you cannot tell who was measured, compared with what, or whether the change was due to the app.
Independent work is thinner. A trial published in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology randomised 238 employees at two UK companies to an eight-week programme using the Headspace app or a wait-list. [3] The wait-list group got a link to NHS advice on work stress and access to the app after the end of the trial, so it was not an active comparison, and the authors note that this limits causal conclusions. [3]
- Results: significant improvements in wellbeing, positive affect, anxiety and depressive symptoms, job strain (through higher job control), and workplace social support. Blood pressure changes were not clearly significant. [3]
- Follow-up: at 16 weeks, wellbeing, depressive symptoms, and job strain were maintained, and anxiety symptoms increased slightly. [3]
- Use: participants averaged about 17 sessions over 8 weeks, and 13 people in the app group never used it. [3]
- Independence: Headspace provided the app free and supplied usage data, and a Headspace employee led the participants' introductory talk but had no role in the analysis or writing. The first author now works for another company that designs behavioural medicine apps. [3]
When is it a good fit, and when is it not?
A meditation app helps with a skill: pausing, noticing, and settling. That is useful, and some people find a structure and a voice make it easier. But if the main cause of your stress sits in workload, staffing, or a difficult manager, an app does not change that. HSE calls help with coping "secondary" action, because it helps employees cope but not the cause. [5]

What are the alternatives?
Check what your employer already offers, such as an employee assistance programme. NHS Every Mind Matters offers self-help in the UK, which Acas points to. [6] Public libraries and community groups often run free classes. If you feel unwell, a GP, a counsellor, or NHS talking therapies is a better first step than an app. [7]
Common questions
Is Headspace free?
There is a 14-day free trial, after which you pay for a subscription. The pages did not say what stays free after the trial, apart from an offer at no cost for members on Original Medicare in the US. [1]
Does Headspace help with burnout?
One trial found improvements in wellbeing and job strain in employees using the app for eight weeks, compared with a wait-list group. [3] It did not measure burnout as the WHO defines it, and an app cannot change the working conditions that cause burnout. [5]
Can I use Headspace through my employer?
Some employers offer it. The organisations site says employers, health plans, and consultants buy it, and shows a demo request route. [4] Ask your HR team what is included and what the employer can see.
